Provider Access
Clyst Vale School welcomes requests from approved education and training providers to speak to students about technical qualifications, apprenticeships and post-16 pathways.
Information about how providers can access students can be found in our Provider Access Policy. This policy sets out how we ensure students have meaningful encounters with a wide range of providers and have access to impartial information about future education and training opportunities.
Apprenticeships
What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience whilst continuing to learn and study towards nationally recognised qualifications.
As an apprentice, you will be employed by a company, earn a salary and spend time developing your knowledge and skills through structured training. Apprenticeships combine practical experience with formal learning, allowing young people to gain qualifications whilst building a career.
For many students, apprenticeships provide an excellent alternative to full-time college or sixth form study and can lead directly to long-term employment, further training or higher-level qualifications.
Why Choose an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships allow you to:
-
Earn whilst you learn.
-
Gain real workplace experience.
-
Develop industry-specific skills.
-
Achieve recognised qualifications.
-
Build professional networks and contacts.
-
Progress to higher-level qualifications and degree-level study.
-
Begin a rewarding career in your chosen sector.
Apprenticeships are available in a huge range of industries including:
-
Engineering
-
Construction
-
Business Administration
-
Digital and IT
-
Health and Social Care
-
Education and Childcare
-
Finance and Accountancy
-
Hospitality and Catering
-
Agriculture and Land-Based Industries
-
Manufacturing
-
Creative and Media Industries
-
Public Services
Apprenticeship Levels
There are apprenticeship opportunities available at a range of levels:
|
Apprenticeship Level |
Equivalent Qualification |
|
Intermediate (Level 2) |
GCSE |
|
Advanced (Level 3) |
A Level |
|
Higher (Levels 4 & 5) |
Foundation Degree / HNC / HND |
|
Degree (Levels 6 & 7) |
Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree |
This means apprenticeships can provide progression all the way from Year 11 through to degree-level qualifications and professional careers.
Apprenticeships at Post-16
Many students choose to apply for apprenticeships after Year 11 rather than attending sixth form or college full-time.
Employers often look for applicants who can demonstrate:
-
Good attendance and punctuality.
-
Strong communication skills.
-
Commitment and reliability.
-
A positive attitude towards learning.
-
Motivation and enthusiasm.
-
Relevant work experience or employer engagement opportunities.
Students interested in apprenticeships should begin researching opportunities during Years 10 and 11 to understand the requirements, application processes and deadlines.
Apprenticeships After Sixth Form
Apprenticeships are not just an alternative to sixth form. Many students choose to complete A Levels or Level 3 qualifications before progressing to:
-
Higher Apprenticeships.
-
Degree Apprenticeships.
-
Professional Training Programmes.
These routes enable students to continue their education whilst gaining significant workplace experience and avoiding many of the costs associated with traditional university study.

At Clyst Vale, we ensure that all students receive impartial information about apprenticeship pathways alongside information about sixth forms, colleges and university routes.
Students have opportunities to:
-
Attend careers events and provider presentations.
-
Access one-to-one careers guidance.
-

Work Experience
Introduction
Work Experience forms an important part of our Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) programme at Clyst Vale Community College.
All Year 10 students have the opportunity to participate in a week of work experience during the summer term. This provides a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the workplace whilst developing employability skills, confidence, independence and a greater understanding of the world of work. The placement itself is only one part of the process. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for securing their own placement, supported by parents, carers and the school, helping them develop communication, organisation and resilience skills that will be invaluable in future education, training and employment.
Why is Work Experience Important?
Work experience helps students to:
-
Gain insight into the workplace and different career sectors.
-
Develop confidence, independence and professionalism.
-
Improve communication and teamwork skills.
-
Experience the expectations of employers.
-
Develop resilience and problem-solving skills.
-
Explore career interests and future pathways.
-
Build evidence and experience for future applications, CVs and interviews.
Many students tell us that work experience helps them confirm career interests, discover new opportunities and develop a clearer understanding of their future aspirations.
Finding a Placement
Students are responsible for identifying and arranging their own placement, with support from the school's careers team, tutors and parents/carers.
When considering possible placements, students should think carefully about:
-
Career areas that interest them.
-
Whether they prefer practical, office-based, creative or customer-facing work.
-
Travel arrangements and how they will get to and from their placement.
-
The working hours they will be expected to complete.
-
What skills and experiences they hope to gain.
-
The opportunities available within different organisations and industries.
Students do not need to secure a placement directly linked to their future career plans. The primary aim is to gain experience of a professional working environment and develop transferable skills that will be valuable in any future pathway.
Where Can I Find a Placement?
Students may find placements through:
-
Family, friends and community contacts.
-
Local employers and businesses.
-
Sports clubs, charities and voluntary organisations.
-
Public sector organisations.
-
Colleges, nurseries, schools and educational settings.
-
Online research and employer websites.
Students are encouraged to start exploring opportunities early, as many employers receive requests from several schools throughout the region.
Using Unifrog
Clyst Vale uses Unifrog to manage the work experience process.
At the beginning of Year 10:
-
Students will receive access to their Unifrog account.
-
Guidance will be provided on how to search for placements and record details.
-
Once a placement has been secured, students will enter the placement information into Unifrog.
-
The school will then complete the necessary administration, safeguarding and compliance checks.
Important Information
Before a placement can be approved:
-
The employer must hold appropriate Employer's Liability Insurance.
-
The employer must hold appropriate Public Liability Insurance where required.
-
The placement must meet safeguarding and health and safety requirements.
-
Appropriate contact and location details must be provided through Unifrog.
Students should ensure that they understand:
-
Start and finish times.
-
Dress code requirements.
-
Travel arrangements.
-
Any equipment or resources they will need.
-
Expectations regarding attendance and conduct.
Advice When Contacting Employers
Securing a placement is part of the learning process. Students are encouraged to approach employers professionally and positively.
When contacting organisations:
-
Research the organisation beforehand.
-
Explain why you are interested in the opportunity.
-
Communicate clearly and politely.
-
Demonstrate enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
-
Check spelling, punctuation and grammar in emails and letters.
-
Follow up professionally if you do not receive an initial response.
The skills developed through applying for work experience are the same skills students will use when applying for college places, apprenticeships, university courses and future employment opportunities.
Virtual Work Experience
Students may also wish to explore virtual work experience programmes to gain additional insight into different industries and careers.
Virtual work experience can provide flexible opportunities to explore sectors including:
-
Engineering
-
Healthcare
-
Business
-
Law
-
Digital industries
-
Aviation and aerospace
-
Finance
-
Creative industries
Students can access a range of opportunities through providers such as:
-
Springpod
-
Speakers for Schools
-

-
Young Professionals
These programmes can complement and enhance students' in-person work experience placement.
