The East Devon Schools Plate was up for grabs as Exmouth arrived on Wednesday afternoon.
The pitches had just about passed an examination by a number of members of the PE team to confirm the icey hardness had gone. As it happens at the first breakdown, an Exmouth head smashed another Exmouth head and the friendly fire resulted in an immediate retirement due to concusion protocol. The game resumed and the Clyst Vale forwards led by Leo with Shewashe and Aaron as wing men dominated the break down and gave Sonny at scrum half some quick ball. Outside Cian pulled the strings to release Charlie and Eli on lovely runs. However, despite huge pressure on the Exmouth line it was the visitors who scored first and then converted.
It was a tight affair by half time with Archie, Jackson and Oscar pilling on the pressure in the opposition 22 but no reward for their efforts. The second half started with an error and a number of missed tackles as Exmouth ran in a second straight from the kick off. However, the boys kept pushing and out wide Henry, Finn and Oli tried to make some space with good runs and were abbly supported from the forwards with an injured Jack working hard at the breakdown and around the lineouts. The boys efforts were rewarded as Charlie spin and sprinted over for a try that Sonny converted. Exmouth looked concerned as started to kick from hand. This just gave an imperious Harry at full back to show is agility and disguise and he repeatedly returned the ball with interest. Exmouth got their third try as the light started to fade on the parents and staff supporting the boys. Their cheers spurred the Clyst Vale boys on one last time and after some combative forward play from Leo and Shewashe, Cian was fed the ball by Sonny. He shapped to kick, then pass, but instead found a hole in the Exmouth defence and ran through for a superb try.
12-19 loss at the end but a superb shift from every player who can all head home in the knowledge all contributed positively to a good performance and in a thoroughly positive atmosphere. Player of the Match: Charlie - tackled well, linked with other players and when called upon banked on himself and cut the Exmouth defence to ribbons.
