U14 Match Report
BackThe Y9 lads were in the second minibus run to St Peters as the forerunners Y11 had already kicked off when the boys ran out onto a fairly rough and ready pitch. Harry was in the captains role and helped set up a shape that would dominate the midfield and hopefully offer speed and strength in attack. Zane, Sonny, Harry and Jack were the skilled and enthusiastic midfielders and all put themselves around pressing the ball high up the pitch. St Peters opted for a long ball and flick on approach that Finn, Elli and Jack managed well, with an excellent Thomas sealing off the left back channel with some well time challenges.
Up front Ellis provided an excellent outlet, but proved himself more than a hold up player as he turned and ran at the St Peters back line. Rueben was flighty and always a threat, driving forward whenever he could. There was some rough treatment for the CVCC Y9 boys, but they played with skill and poise and built a lead soon after the start. Ellis raced on to a super assist from Harry to slot home an opener. To the lads surprise St Peters pinched a goal back after the home side ran rampant down the left. An excellent Charlie in goal could do nothing about the shot through a crowd and the game was balanced at 1-1. Then the CVCC boys curled a super corner in for Rueben to head home at the far post on the stroke of half time.
After the break Arthur came on for Jack and showed good vision and timing in his right back role. Will also came on and almost with his first touch scored a superb rising half volley into the roof of the net. Charlie came under increasing pressure, but he showed great composure under a barrage of crosses and communicated well with his defence. However, it was very much Ellis who stole the show with a further two goals to claim a deserved hat trick. However, it was very much a team performance with some lovely link play from Thomas to Rueben, Harry to Ellis and Arthur to Jack. In the end it was a comfortable 6-2 win for Clyst Vale, but the boys never let up and all players including subs gave 100% right to the final whistle. Player of the Match: Ellis, happy up front with back to goal, running at defenders or as a recipient of set plays.
