Curriculum Intent
Our aim in Performing Arts is to enable students to deliver exceptional performances in dance, drama and music.
Drama at Clyst Vale
Drama at CVCC is a dynamic and inclusive subject that plays a vital role in our Performing Arts provision. It’s not just for aspiring actors—it’s for every student who wants to grow in confidence, creativity, and self-awareness. Through drama, students develop essential transferable skills such as teamwork, resilience, negotiation, and public speaking, which support their personal development and future employability.
Our curriculum is exciting, practical, and varied. Students explore a wide range of themes, issues, and ideas through devising original work, interpreting scripts, and studying influential playwrights and theatre practitioners. They learn how meaning is communicated through performance, developing vocal and physical skills in our two custom-built drama spaces and outdoor amphitheatre.
Drama at CVCC is enriched by a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom. These include annual performances at the Barnfield Theatre, workshops with professional artists, regular theatre trips, and visits from touring theatre companies. Students are encouraged to take risks, challenge themselves, and express their ideas in a supportive and creative environment.
Ultimately, Drama at CVCC is about helping students make sense of the world, understand different cultures and perspectives, and grow into confident, thoughtful young adults.

Music at Clyst Vale
Music at CVCC is a vibrant and inclusive subject that nurtures creativity, confidence, and collaboration. Our curriculum is designed to develop students’ musical skills and understanding through performing, composing, and appraising. It supports personal growth and provides a strong foundation for further study and future careers in the arts and beyond.
Students explore a wide range of musical styles, traditions, and cultures, gaining practical experience with instruments, voice, and music technology. They learn to perform individually and in groups, compose original pieces, and analyse music from different genres and historical periods. Lessons encourage creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression, while building technical and theoretical knowledge.
Music is taught in our specialist classrooms equipped with instruments and digital resources. Students receive two lessons per fortnight at KS3, where they develop key skills such as listening, teamwork, discipline, and resilience. The curriculum is enriched with opportunities to take part in concerts, ensembles, workshops, and trips to live performances.
We also welcome visiting musicians and offer extracurricular activities including choirs, bands, and music clubs. Our aim is to inspire a lifelong love of music and help students become confident, reflective and skilled musicians.
