This is how Rev Chris Martin described Clyst Vale Carol Services over the past five years, and the Carol Service of 2017 lived up to the description. Whimple Church was full, despite the parking challenges. The programme blended traditional hymns and Bible readings with modern songs and amusing, secular pieces. The Jazz Band contributed to several numbers, and supported the hymns. Most student musicians opted for contemporary songs, which allowed them to showcase their skills. Students from every year group from Year 7 to Year 13 were involved, which is great news in terms of the quality in years to come. I imagine that the ages of the congregation ranged from 0 to 80+. It was a lovely community event with great spirit, a genuine celebration of Christmas, and a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the talent of Clyst Vale’s students.
