‘Othello’: by Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory

Recently our Year 12 and 13 A-Level English students went to see an excellent production of ‘Othello’ at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter. This was a great opportunity for our students to gain an understanding of a different interpretation of the play, which is one of our new set texts for the A-level Literature course. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the play and were impressed by the modern take on the enduring classic.

Below is a review collaboratively written by some of our Year 12 students:

Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory’s adaptation of ‘Othello’ was invigorating, stirring and thought provoking. The cast successfully managed to include 21st Century elements of technology, music and style, whilst still remaining true to its Shakespearean heritage and origins. Although the production contained minimalist use of props, this didn’t impact on the story thanks to the clever use of light and sound, as well as the cast’s modern, sophisticated costumes – adding to the contemporary element. The actors, who were committed to their parts, provided a glossy and flawless performance bringing the story to life and making it accessible to the modern audience. Particularly interesting was the focus on Othello as a Muslim in a Christian world – something which resonates with a society facing new prejudices today.
