Maths Challenge

Maths geniuses achieve success in national contest.

In February the top maths sets from Years 10 and 11 took part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge.

Mr Turnock’s Year 11 group had one Gold Certificate winner in Ben Perrot as well as 4 Silver Certificates and 6 Bronze. Ben went on to the next round – the formidable European Kangaroo Maths Challenge, where his score was above average.

These results were impressive enough, but the Year 11s were outsmarted by Miss Blair’s Year 10 group with 1 Gold, 5 Silver and 12 Bronze certificates. Oli Self won the Best in School Certificate together with his Gold, and went on to get a Merit Certificate in the Olympiad Hamilton Paper.

In May the top sets from Years 7 and 8 took part in the Junior Maths Challenge.

Altogether they achieved 21 certificates – 14 in Year 8 and 7 in Year7. Sophie Ellis from Miss Blair’s group had the highest score in Year 7 with the only Silver Certificate in the year group. The best results from Year 8 were Abi Bunkum and Joanna Essery from Mrs Adie’s group who both had the same mark, and both earned a Gold Certificate (but were a little camera shy!).
