Clyst Vale Makes the News!

Key Stage 3 Students get the opportunity to be live news reporters for the day!

The last few months have been hectic in the English block.  At the end of the spring term a number of our gifted and talented students took part in the BBC School News Report initiative.  This involved students researching, writing and uploading news stories on to the BBC news website for a worldwide audience to read.

The BBC was so impressed with our students that we were assigned our own local news journalist, Spotlight’s Simon Clemison, who gave tips on a variety of news journalism insider secrets from talking to the camera to how to apply news values to a story you are working on.

Word spread in the media community about the quality articles our budding journalists were working on and very soon BBC Spotlight had offered Erin Santillo his own 5 minute slot on their 6.30 evening programme and a trip to the Houses of Parliament to interview the Minster for Transport for his report.  BBC Radio 4 were so impressed  with an article on the ‘Arab Spring’ revolutionary uprisings that they organised for Blythe Rowley, Jen Lewis and Elsie Taylor to interview students in Tunisia via a satellite link.  Their interview was then broadcast on The World Tonight programme and repeated on BBC Radio Devon.

This is the first time CVCC has been involved in this project but students are already considering next year’s articles.

Praise goes to Miss Haynes who organised all the students and worked closely with the BBC to make the experience so valuable.
